Memo for the 4th English Writing Class

To start the lesson:

How powerful naming is! --------about the attitude towards a new class or a new group of people

1Try to make yourself introduced, attractive and impressive to them!

(Take the Chinese enterprises’ high advertising expense to set up their bands and increase the product sale.)

2Something to be learned from Zhang Xiao:

Guessed by herself:

Standing out and suggesting how to make people know each other in limited time (shopping)?

Not using a proper name for her free writing?

Sharing her article with Mr. Yang and the classmates as the first one?

Mr. Yang’s opinion:

Her great change from paying her attention to her own business to participating in the class discussion. The transition is worthy of appreciation.

3The conclusion:

Institutional impact

Two kinds of psychological states: field-dependent vs. field-independent

 (Derived from US pilots’ training)

Think about a question: Which word will you choose from those two to express your own situation?

The main part of the lesson:

1、  about our textbook : the Preface

The students’ opinions about the Preface:

Appeal writing

Informative/ reader-oriented

Politeness

Theory priming

Promotion

Encouragement for the following students

Systematic description

Acknowledgement of/ for others’ contribution

Just to reveal the facts (Mr. Yang’s idea)

Mr. Yang: Knowledge Accumulation vs. Creativity Development

2、  about our last assignments: Abstracts written mainly by the boys and Zhang Yunyun

1)      Huo Da: His abstract is written in Chinese about Chess Strategies(博弈论)

“There are some disadvantages in the Eame—on the one hand, it’s not enough for me to express my perspectives in it; on the other hand, it can not prevent students from copying and revising an abstract from somewhere else.”

2)      Wu Wenfeng: His abstract is about the relationship between China and Japan. He agrees with Mr. Yang and considers Eame as a very efficient tool.

3)      Qi Yeran: He used to dream that he could write the abstract in Chinese and Eame would help translate it into English and also trim and decorate the language. When using it, his hope was crushed. He found it’s not so easy to answer the questions from the Eame. His abstract is on the social influence on college students.

4)      Xue Mingguo: He had similar experience as Qi Yeran. His abstract is about the importance of sports to our mental health.

5)      Yang Yuxin: He was confused about Eame at first. After reading a text called Readme on the net, he felt much clearer. His abstract is about China’s education.

6)      Zhang Yunyun: She had done a good job according to Mr. Yang’s instructions (carefully reading the handout, the introductive article about 10000 words and Unit 7 of our textbook.) She has something about the market prospect of tea drink to share with us.

3a group discussion presentation from Room 115A ( Wang Jingwen, Zhang Xiao, Yang Hairu and Fu Yangyang):

What a fantastic and excellent job and we can really learn the way they did the discussion.

Assignments for the next class:

Rewriting and editing your own abstract, and then discussing about it and evaluating it.

(Pay attention to the title, the marks and the key words)

Try to learn more about Eame and get familiar with it.

(From the handout, the introductive article about 10000 words and Unit 7 of our textbook)

正月是农历新年的开始,人们往往将它看作是新的一年年运好坏的兆示期。所以,过年的时候“禁忌”特别多。当然,各个地方的风俗习惯不一样,过年的禁忌也是不一样的。
